Kim Olson, running for Commissioner of Agriculture, spent the weekend of August twenty fourth in Jasper. During her time here, she toured the cafeteria of the local elementary school to talk to the workers about the importance of feeding our children. The Department of Agriculture is responsible for the free and reduced lunch program in Texas. Kim gave a very compelling talk to the group that gathered at the Nehemiah Family Life Center. She touched on the importance of getting out and voting, on her time in the Air Force, and on her 9/11 experience. Later, she toured a potential site for a community garden with City Councilman Rashad Lewis. Saturday brought her to Third Day Farm and Ranch for a tour, and a discussion with Dan about how things could improve on the state level to help small farms. Kim also had an opportunity to meet with the local Master Gardeners to discuss programs and services in the community, and to tour their facility and talk about conservation and sustainability solutions. Last but not least, she was able to visit and support a few small local businesses, including Health Perks coffee shop.
